Her education was at the Hyde Park Saint Thomas the Apostle Church elementary school. She credits her grandmother for getting her into jazz while she was young. Many believe she got the name Chaka within the Panthers however she claims it was Yoruba Baba who gave her that name at 13 when she first joined. She quit the Panthers in 1969, and left high school, after having attended Calumet High School, and Kenwood High School. (Now Kenwood Academy). The singer began performing in small groups around the Chicago region, first with Cash McCall's group Lyfe that included her boyfriend at the time, Hassan Khan. Chaka and Hassan married in 1970.
